Little Fliers indoor play area, Adelaide Airport, South Australia, Australia

The inital enthusiasm of departure soon fades when travelling long-haul

Whilst not strictly speaking a “post” in the traditional sense, I will from time to time be posting snippets of information that I think are interesting or useful. This is the first of these posts.

Whilst transit stops with small children are never easy, a one hour sojourn is quite manageable. Problems arise in the two to five hour bracket where there is not quite enough time to duck out and see anything and too much time to just hang around the shops at the airport.

We had a couple of these stops on our way back from Thailand recently: three hours in each of both Changi at Singapore and Adelaide Airport in Australia. We arrived at Changi after dark and so too late to take a dip in the airport pool (more on that some other time). Instead, we rode the travelators on our Trunki (more also on those some other time) for as long as that remained amusing and then spent some time wreaking havoc in the toy store.

So you can imagine my delight upon clearing customs at Adelaide (that killed the first 45 minutes or so) and moving upstairs to the domestic departure lounge to find an indoor play area. Whilst not overly ambitious in its scope it is more than adequate for its purpose of entertaining children under six. The play area consists of a plane perched high up above the heads of the “grown-ups” and reached by climbing through a complex network of obstacles. The play area also has a little car and some maze type puzzles lining the walls.

Certainly enough to keep the littlies entertained for at least a little while

It is conveniently located next to Hudson’s coffee and adjacent to an area equipped with tables, chairs and free wireless internet access. There is a God! Thank you Adelaide Airport on this wonderful initiative. May others soon follow suit.
